Changing From Solo to Ensemble Same Staff

Article applies to:
  • Sibelius 5, 6, 7

Description

Text instructions placed in the part do not change between solo and ensemble instrument sounds.

Solution

When switching between solo and ensemble sounds it's important to realize that these are separate "instruments" in the SoundWorld system, with their own unique sound IDs. A given staff may be assigned a solo or ensemble sound ID, but a text instruction would only temporarily change that and the use of articulations or technique markings may cause the sound to revert unexpectedly to the original sound assigned to the staff.

The correct way to switch between solo and ensemble sounds is to create an instrument change at the desired location and selecting the appropriate solo or ensemble staff (depending on which way you are going) from the library's custom instrument group. At the end of the passage, create another instrument change that reverts to the original sound.

Instrument changes of this sort are for playback purposes only and can be hidden in the score so as not to alter the printed part. You can use a text instruction indicating solo or ensemble playing for the live musicians together with the instrument change, but the text instruction will not be responsible for the change in playback.
